Como usar o Past Continuous?
Resposta curta
I was studying at eight. I was walking home when it started to rain. A ação curta que interrompe fica no Simple Past.
Regras de utilização
Como se forma
| Tipo | Estrutura | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Afirmativa | I / he / she / it + was + -ing; you / we / they + were + -ing | She was cooking. They were playing. |
| Negativa | wasn't / weren't + -ing | He wasn't sleeping. |
| Pergunta | Was / Were + sujeito + -ing? | Were you studying? |
| Resposta curta | Yes, … was/were. / No, … wasn't/weren't. | Yes, I was. No, they weren't. |
Ortografia do -ing
- Regra geral: forma-base + -ing: play → playing, study → studying.
- Verbo em -e: retira-se o e: make → making, write → writing.
- Verbo curto consoante-vogal-consoante: duplica a consoante: run → running, sit → sitting, swim → swimming.
- Verbo em -ie: passa a -ying: lie → lying, die → dying.
Os quatro usos principais
- Ação em curso num momento preciso do passado: At eight o'clock yesterday I was studying. What were you doing at seven?
- Ação longa interrompida por outra curta: I was walking home when it started to rain.
- Duas ações em simultâneo (com while): While Ana was cooking, Pedro was washing the dishes.
- Cenário de uma narração: The sun was shining and children were playing in the street when the bus arrived.
When e while
- While introduz a ação em curso, quase sempre no Past Continuous: While I was sleeping, my phone rang.
- When introduz muitas vezes a ação curta que interrompe, no Simple Past: I was sleeping when my phone rang.
Comparação com o Simple Past
| Simple Past | Past Continuous |
|---|---|
| Ação terminada ou sequência: I read a book last night. | Ação em curso: I was reading a book at nine. |
| When the teacher came in, the students stood up. (levantaram-se depois) | When the teacher came in, the students were talking. (já estavam a falar) |
Como decidir
- A ação estava a decorrer num momento do passado (at 8 pm, while, when…)? Past Continuous.
Simple Past.
- O verbo exprime um estado (know, like, want, believe)? Simple Past, nunca -ing.
- Forme a frase: was / were + verbo-ing.
Exemplos corretos e incorretos
| Incorreto | Correto | Porquê |
|---|---|---|
| She studying at nine. | She was studying at nine. | falta o auxiliar |
| They was playing. | They were playing. | they pede were |
| I was go home. | I was going home. | depois de was/were vem -ing |
| I was knowing the answer. | I knew the answer. | know é verbo de estado |
| I was eating when the phone was ringing. | I was eating when the phone rang. | a ação que interrompe fica no Simple Past |
Exceções
- Verbos de estado (know, like, love, hate, want, need, believe, understand, belong) não costumam ter -ing: I knew her name, e não I was knowing. Já have com o sentido de «tomar» aceita -ing: We were having lunch.
She stood up, picked up her bag and walked out.
- Ação concluída vista como um todo: Yesterday I studied English for two hours é a forma normal; o Past Continuous destaca antes o momento em curso.
- Always + Past Continuous exprime crítica ou irritação: He was always losing his keys.
- Português: «estava a fazer» corresponde ao Past Continuous, mas o imperfeito de hábito («fazia») traduz-se muitas vezes por Simple Past ou used to.
Exemplos resolvidos
Exemplo 1 — As quatro formas
Enunciado: Escreva a afirmativa, a negativa, a pergunta e as respostas curtas com Ana / study / at 9 pm last night.
Resolução:
- Sujeito Ana = she, logo was. Afirmativa: Ana was studying at 9 pm last night.
- Negativa: Ana wasn't studying at 9 pm last night.
- Pergunta: Was Ana studying at 9 pm last night?
- Respostas curtas: Yes, she was. / No, she wasn't.
Resposta: as frases acima.
Enunciado: Complete: (a) I (walk) home when it (start) to rain. (b) While they (play) football, the teacher (arrive). (c) She (sleep) when the phone (ring). (d) What (you / do) at seven o'clock?
Resolução:
- (a) Caminhar estava em curso; a chuva interrompe: was walking, started.
- (b) While introduz a ação em curso; a chegada do professor é o acontecimento pontual: were playing, arrived.
- (c) Dormir estava em curso, tocar interrompe: was sleeping, rang.
- (d) Momento preciso: were you doing.
Resposta: (a) was walking, started; (b) were playing, arrived; (c) was sleeping, rang; (d) were you doing.
Exemplo 3 — Ortografia do -ing e ações simultâneas
Enunciado: (a) Escreva o -ing de: run, write, sit, lie, study, play. (b) Complete: While Ana (cook), her brother (run) in the garden.
Resolução:
- (a) run e sit duplicam a consoante: running, sitting. Write perde o e: writing. Lie passa a -ying: lying. Study e play mantêm o y: studying, playing.
- (b) As duas ações decorrem ao mesmo tempo, com while: was cooking, was running.
Resposta: (a) running, writing, sitting, lying, studying, playing; (b) was cooking, was running. Verificação: Ana e her brother são singulares, por isso ambas as formas levam was.
Exemplo 4 — Nível de exame: texto
Enunciado: Complete: Yesterday at 6 pm it (rain) heavily. I (wait) for the bus when a car (stop) next to me. Pedro, my classmate, (drive) it. He (smile) and (offer) me a lift.
Resolução:
- At 6 pm indica um momento em curso: was raining.
- Esperar estava em curso e o carro interrompe: was waiting, stopped.
Resposta: was raining, was waiting, stopped, was driving, smiled, offered.
Erros frequentes
- Esquecer o auxiliar. She studying → She was studying. Só o -ing não basta.
- Trocar was e were. They was → They were; I were → I was.
- Usar a base depois de was/were. I was go → I was going.
- Aplicar -ing a verbos de estado. She was wanting a phone → She wanted a phone.
- Pôr a ação que interrompe no Past Continuous. …when the phone was ringing → …when the phone rang.
- Usar o Past Continuous para uma sequência. He was opening the door, was entering and was sitting → He opened the door, entered and sat down.
- Errar a ortografia do -ing. Runing, makeing, writting → running, making, writing.

Perguntas frequentes
«Estava a chover» corresponde a It was raining.
Esquecer was/were, trocar a concordância (they was) e usar o Past Continuous para a ação que interrompe. Releia sempre a frase e pergunte: qual ação estava em curso?
Resumo
- Forma: was/were + verbo-ing; negativa wasn't/weren't; pergunta com Was/Were no início.
