Como usar o superlativo (-est e most)?
Resposta curta
Com adjetivos curtos junta-se the + -est (the tallest); com adjetivos longos usa-se the most + adjetivo (the most beautiful). Há irregulares: good → the best, bad → the worst.
Se só comparar duas coisas, use o comparativo (taller than, more expensive than).
Estrutura básica
Adjetivo curto: the + adjetivo + -est + (nome) + in / of + grupo Adjetivo longo: the most + adjetivo + (nome) + in / of + grupo
Exemplos: Ana is the tallest girl in the class. e This is the most expensive phone of the three.
Quadro-resumo das regras
| Tipo de adjetivo | Regra | Exemplos |
|---|---|---|
| Uma sílaba | the + -est | tall → the tallest; cheap → the cheapest; strong → the strongest |
| Uma sílaba terminada em -e | the + -st | large → the largest; nice → the nicest; safe → the safest |
| Uma sílaba: uma vogal + uma consoante | duplica a consoante + -est | big → the biggest; hot → the hottest; thin → the thinnest |
| Duas sílabas terminadas em -y | -y passa a -i + -est | happy → the happiest; easy → the easiest; busy → the busiest |
| Restantes de duas sílabas e todos os de três ou mais | the most + adjetivo | famous → the most famous; careful → the most careful; beautiful → the most beautiful |
| Irregulares | forma própria | good → the best; bad → the worst; little → the least; much/many → the most |
Como decidir: contar as sílabas
- Conte as sílabas do adjetivo (tall = 1; happy = 2; expensive = 3).
- Três ou mais sílabas: use sempre the most.
Exemplos corretos e incorretos
Com a parte final do grupo marcada por in ou of, e sempre com the:
- Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa.
- Russia is the largest country in the world.
- Luanda is one of the biggest cities in Africa.
- Pedro is the youngest of the four brothers.
- That is the best film I have ever seen.
- Mathematics is the most difficult subject for my sister.
| Errado | Correto | Porquê |
|---|---|---|
| She is the most tallest girl. | She is the tallest girl. | Duas marcas de superlativo |
| It is the most best film. | It is the best film. | best já é superlativo |
| This is the more expensive phone. | This is the most expensive phone. | more é comparativo |
| Ana is tallest in the class. | Ana is the tallest in the class. | Falta the |
| He is the fastest of the school. | He is the fastest in the school. | Lugar ou grupo singular pede in |
| It was the beautifulest day. | It was the most beautiful day. | Adjetivo longo |
Comparação com estruturas parecidas
| Estrutura | Quando se usa | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Comparativo (-er / more… than) | Duas coisas | Ana is taller than Rita. |
| Superlativo (the -est / the most) | Três ou mais | Ana is the tallest in the class. |
| as… as | Igualdade | Ana is as tall as Rita. |
| the… the… | Duas mudanças paralelas | The more you read, the better you write. |
Exceções
- Irregulares: good → best, bad → worst, little → least, much/many → most. Para a distância, far → the farthest ou the furthest.
- Old: oldest é a forma geral; eldest usa-se para irmãos e familiares (my eldest sister).
- Sem «the»: depois de possessivos (my best friend, her youngest brother) e quando a mesma coisa é comparada consigo própria (The river is widest here.).
- Advérbios: formam-se da mesma maneira, mas o the é opcional: She runs (the) fastest. Os advérbios em -ly usam most: most carefully, most quickly. Well → best e badly → worst.
- «One of the…»: depois leva o plural, e o verbo concorda com one: One of the best players is injured.
- O oposto: the least + adjetivo significa «o menos…»: the least expensive, the least important.
Exemplos resolvidos
Exemplo 1 — Formar o superlativo
- interesting tem quatro sílabas: the most interesting.
Resposta: the smallest, the nicest, the hottest, the busiest, the most interesting.
Exemplo 2 — In ou of?
Enunciado: Complete com in ou of: (a) Pedro is the youngest ___ the four brothers. (b) Maria is the best student ___ the school.
Resposta: (a) of; (b) in. Verificação: se logo a seguir vem um número ou um plural (of the three, of all), é of; se vem um lugar ou grupo no singular (in the class, in Angola), é in.
Exemplo 3 — Dados numa tabela
Enunciado: Quatro alunos fazem estes percursos até à escola: Ana 2 km, Bruno 5 km, Carla 3 km, Daniel 9 km. Escreva duas frases com superlativos.
Resolução:
- O maior valor é 9 km (Daniel). Far é irregular: the farthest (ou the furthest).
Resposta: Daniel lives the farthest from school. Ana lives the nearest to school. Verificação: 9 > 5 > 3 > 2, logo Daniel é o extremo máximo e Ana o mínimo.
Exemplo 4 — Nível de exame: corrigir erros
Enunciado: Corrija: (a) This is the most cheapest shop in the neighbourhood. (b) Ana is the more intelligent student of the class. (c) That was the baddest day of my life. (d) He is the tallest of the school.
- (b) more é do comparativo; o superlativo de intelligent é the most intelligent. E a turma é um grupo-lugar: in the class.
- (c) bad é irregular: the worst. A expressão of my life está correta.
- (d) A escola é um lugar: in the school.
Resposta: (a) the cheapest shop; (b) the most intelligent student in the class; (c) the worst day of my life; (d) the tallest in the school.
Erros frequentes
- Juntar duas marcas (the most tallest, the most best): escolha -est ou most, nunca os dois.
- Esquecer o «the»: She is tallest só se aceita em casos especiais; na regra geral escreva the tallest.
- Usar o comparativo em vez do superlativo (the more big, the more expensive): more é para comparar dois.
- Traduzir «de» sempre por «of»: «o mais alto da turma» é the tallest in the class, porque a turma é um grupo-lugar.
- Esquecer a ortografia: the bigest (falta duplicar o g), the happyest (o y passa a i), the nicest (não niceest).
- Esquecer o plural depois de «one of the»: one of the best student está errado; diga one of the best students.

Ver dica
Identifique o preço maior e o menor antes de escrever.
Ver solução
Phone B is the most expensive of the three. Phone A is the cheapest of the three. Phone A is the least expensive of the three.

Perguntas frequentes
Preciso sempre de «the» antes do superlativo?
Na regra geral, sim: the tallest, the most beautiful.
- Adjetivos curtos: the + -est (the tallest); em -y: -iest; vogal + consoante: duplica a consoante.
- Adjetivos longos: the most + adjetivo; nunca junte most e -est.
- Irregulares a decorar: best, worst, least, most, farthest/furthest.
- Depois do superlativo: in + lugar ou grupo singular; of + conjunto contado ou plural.
- One of the + superlativo + plural e ever + presente perfeito são estruturas muito pedidas em exame.
