Exercícios resolvidos de verbo to be
Resposta curta
Para resolver exercícios de verbo to be, identifique o sujeito e o tempo: no presente, I am, he/she/it is, you/we/they are; no passado, I/he/she/it was, you/we/they were. A negativa junta not (isn't, aren't, wasn't, weren't) e a pergunta passa o verbo para antes do sujeito (Is she…? Were you…?).
Resumo da teoria necessária
O verbo to be significa «ser», «estar» e, com a idade, «ter»: I'm 15 («tenho 15 anos»). Nunca precisa de do/does/did.
Formas do presente e do passado
| Sujeito | Presente | Contraída | Negativa (contraída) | Passado | Negativa (passado) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| I | am | I'm | I'm not | was | wasn't |
| you | are | you're | you aren't | were | weren't |
| he / she / it | is | he's / she's / it's | isn't | was | wasn't |
| we / they | are | we're / they're | aren't | were | weren't |
Frases e perguntas
- Negativa: sujeito + be + not → They are not at home → They aren't at home.
- Pergunta: be + sujeito → Are they at home?
- Resposta curta: Yes, they are. / No, they aren't. Na afirmativa não se contrai: Yes, I am (nunca Yes, I'm).
- Palavras interrogativas: Where is the school? How old are you? Who was absent?
Estratégia de resolução
- Sublinhe o sujeito e converta-o em pronome (My parents = they).
- Veja se há marcas de passado (yesterday, last week, in 2019) ou de presente (now, today, every day).
- Escolha a forma do quadro.
- Se pedem negativa ou pergunta, acrescente not ou inverta o sujeito e o verbo.
- Verifique: o verbo concorda com o sujeito? Há mais de um verbo conjugado? (deve haver só um auxiliar).
Exemplos resolvidos
Exemplo 1 — Nível básico: completar com am, is ou are
Enunciado: Complete: (a) I ___ a student. (b) My mother ___ a doctor. (c) We ___ in the classroom. (d) The books ___ on the desk.
Resolução:
- (a) Sujeito I → am.
- (b) My mother = she → is.
- (c) We → are.
- (d) The books = they → are.
Resposta: (a) am; (b) is; (c) are; (d) are. Verificação: só I leva am; só he/she/it (ou singular) levam is; o resto leva are.
Exemplo 2 — Nível básico: negativa, pergunta e resposta curta
Enunciado: Dada a frase Paulo is at home, escreva a negativa, a pergunta e a resposta curta negativa.
Resolução:
- Negativa: is + not → Paulo isn't at home.
- Pergunta: passar is para o início → Is Paulo at home?
- Resposta curta negativa: Paulo = he → No, he isn't.
Resposta: Paulo isn't at home. / Is Paulo at home? / No, he isn't. Verificação: a resposta curta usa o pronome (he), não o nome.
Exemplo 3 — Nível intermédio: passado
Enunciado: Complete com was ou were: (a) Last Monday I ___ in Lubango. (b) Our teachers ___ happy with the results. (c) ___ you at the market yesterday? (d) The film ___ not very long.
Resolução:
- (a) Last Monday indica passado; I → was.
- (b) Our teachers = they → were.
- (c) you → Were (pergunta: verbo antes do sujeito).
- (d) The film = it → was (wasn't).
Resposta: (a) was; (b) were; (c) Were; (d) was. Verificação: was só com I/he/she/it; you, we e they levam sempre were.
Exemplo 4 — Nível de exame: escolha múltipla
Enunciado: Escolha a opção correta. (1) My cousins ___ from Benguela. (A) is (B) are (C) am (2) ___ your sister at school now? (A) Are (B) Am (C) Is (3) I ___ not ready for the test. (A) am (B) is (C) are (4) We ___ at the beach last Sunday. (A) was (B) were (C) are
Resolução:
- (1) My cousins = they → B (are).
- (2) your sister = she → C (Is), em posição de pergunta.
- (3) I → A (am); com not: I am not ou I'm not (não existe I amn't).
- (4) last Sunday = passado; we → B (were).
Resposta: 1-B, 2-C, 3-A, 4-B. Verificação: em (2) a opção A seria correta só com sujeito plural (Are your sisters…?).
Erros frequentes
- Usar have para a idade: I have 15 years → I am 15 (ou I'm 15 years old).
- Esquecer o verbo: She a teacher → She is a teacher. Em inglês o sujeito nunca vem sem verbo.
- Concordância errada: My friends is here → My friends are here.
- Usar do/does com to be: Do you be tired? → Are you tired?
- Usar a contração na resposta curta afirmativa: Yes, he's → Yes, he is.
- Confundir was e were: You was late → You were late; They was → They were.
- Dizer I amn't: a forma correta é I'm not; em perguntas negativas diz-se Aren't I?
