Como usar there is e there are?
Resposta curta
There is e there are dizem que algo existe ou está num lugar (em português, «há» ou «existe»). Usa-se there is com nomes no singular e incontáveis (There is a book, There is water) e there are com plurais (There are two books). Negativa: isn't / aren't. Pergunta: Is there…? / Are there…?
There is a market near my house.

- Se for singular ou incontável (water, rice, money, time), use is.
- Se for plural, use are.
- Se o tempo for o passado, use was (singular/incontável) e were (plural): There was a power cut. There were three buses.
- Nas frases negativas e perguntas com plural ou incontável, prefira any; nas afirmativas, some.
Some, any, a, an e a lot of
- Afirmativa: There is a book. There are some books. There is some rice.
- Negativa e pergunta: There aren't any books. Are there any books?
- a / an só com singular contável: There is an orange.
- Quantidade: There are a lot of students. There are many students (preferível em frases negativas e perguntas: There aren't many students). Com incontáveis: There is a lot of water. There isn't much water.
Perguntar a quantidade
- Contável: How many + plural + are there? → How many chairs are there? There are twelve.
- Incontável: How much + nome + is there? → How much milk is there? There is a litre.

Resolução:
- Negativa: are → aren't e some → any → There aren't any chairs in the classroom.
- Pergunta: inverter are e there e manter any → Are there any chairs in the classroom?
- Resposta curta afirmativa: Yes, there are.

Resposta: Presente: In my town there is a big market and there are many shops. Passado: In my town there was a big market and there were many shops. Verificação: cada verbo concorda com o nome que lhe segue (market → is/was; shops → are/were).
There's a pen and two books on the desk. Em exercícios escolares, siga a regra do manual; em caso de dúvida, reescreva a frase para evitar a ambiguidade (There are a pen and two books…).
- Contração com plural: a contração there's aparece por vezes na fala com plurais, mas na escrita escolar use there are.
- Respostas curtas: não se contrai a resposta afirmativa (Yes, there is. e não Yes, there's.).
There is some good news.
Erros frequentes
- Dizer «have» em vez de «there is/are»: In the city have many cars está errado; diga In the city there are many cars.
- There is com plural: There is two cats → There are two cats.
- Usar some em perguntas e negativas: Are there some books? costuma ser substituído por Are there any books?; e There aren't some → There aren't any.
- Trocar there por they: They are a bank in the street → There is a bank in the street.
- Esquecer o artigo: There is book on the desk → There is a book on the desk.
- Esquecer there nas respostas curtas: Yes, is. → Yes, there is.

Qual é a diferença entre there is e it is?
There is diz que algo existe ou apresenta-o pela primeira vez (There is a pen on the desk). It is identifica ou descreve algo já conhecido (It is a blue pen).
Quando não se deve usar there is/are?
The key is on the table).
