Resposta curta

Exemplo: «I am tired,» said Ana passa a Ana said (that) she was tired.

O que é o discurso indireto

No discurso direto repetem-se as palavras da pessoa, entre aspas: «I like football,» said Pedro. No discurso indireto conta-se a mesma informação com as palavras de quem relata: Pedro said (that) he liked football.

  • A conjunção that pode ser omitida: He said he was tired.

Discurso diretoDiscurso indireto
Present Simple: «I like music.»Past Simple: She said she liked music.
Present Continuous: «I am working.»Past Continuous: He said he was working.
Present Perfect: «I have finished.»Past Perfect: She said she had finished.
Past Simple: «I saw him.»Past Perfect: He said he had seen him. (ou fica no Past Simple)
Past Continuous: «I was sleeping.»Past Perfect Continuous: She said she had been sleeping.
will: «I will help.»would: He said he would help.
can: «I can swim.»could: She said she could swim.
may: «I may come.»might: He said he might come.
must (obrigação): «I must go.»had to: She said she had to go.
would, could, should, mightnão mudam

2. Pronomes e possessivos

Os pronomes ajustam-se à pessoa de quem se fala: I → he/she, my → his/her, we → they, you → me, him, her, them (conforme a pessoa a quem se dirigiu a frase). Raciocine sempre com a pergunta «quem diz?» e «a quem?».

3. Expressões de tempo e lugar

DiretoIndireto
nowthen
todaythat day
tonightthat night
yesterdaythe day before / the previous day
tomorrowthe next day / the following day
last weekthe week before / the previous week
next weekthe following week / the week after
two days agotwo days before
this / thesethat / those
herethere

4. Quando o tempo não recua

  • O verbo introdutor está no presente: Ana says she is tired.
  • A informação é uma verdade geral ou continua válida: The teacher said that water boils at 100 degrees Celsius at sea level.
  • Os modais sem forma passada: would, could, should, might, ought to ficam iguais.

5. Say ou tell?

Say não leva pessoa logo a seguir: She said (that) she was ill. Tell exige a pessoa: She told me (that) she was ill. Dizer said me ou told that é erro.

Exemplos resolvidos

Exemplo 1 — Presente simples

Enunciado: Passe ao discurso indireto: «I like football,» said Pedro.

Resolução:

  2. O pronome I passa a he (Pedro).
  3. Like (Present Simple) recua para o Past Simple: liked.

Resposta: Pedro said (that) he liked football. Verificação: o tempo recuou (like → liked) e o pronome acompanha Pedro (he).

Exemplo 2 — Will, tomorrow e you

Enunciado: Passe ao discurso indireto: Maria said to me: «I will call you tomorrow.»

Resolução:

  1. Said to me pode tornar-se told me.
  2. I é a Maria: passa a she. You sou eu, que ouvi a frase: passa a me.
  3. Will recua para would.
  4. Tomorrow passa a the next day.

Resposta: Maria told me (that) she would call me the next day. Verificação: quatro mudanças (verbo introdutor, pronomes, will, tomorrow), todas coerentes.

Exemplo 3 — Verdade geral

Enunciado: Passe ao discurso indireto: The teacher said, «Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius at sea level.»

Resolução:

  2. Nesse caso o tempo pode ficar no presente.
  3. Retire as aspas e acrescente that.

Resposta: The teacher said (that) water boils at 100 degrees Celsius at sea level.

Enunciado: Passe ao discurso indireto: (a) «We have finished our homework,» the girls said. (b) «I can't come today,» said Luís. (c) «I must go now,» she said.

Resolução:

  1. (a) We → they, our → their; Present Perfect recua para Past Perfect: had finished.
  2. (b) I → he; can't → couldn't; today → that day.
  3. (c) I → she; must (obrigação) → had to; now → then.

Resposta: (a) The girls said (that) they had finished their homework. (b) Luís said (that) he couldn't come that day. (c) She said (that) she had to go then.

Erros frequentes

  • Esquecer o recuo do tempo (He said he is tired, relatando um momento passado). Com said/told no passado, recue.
  • Usar said me ou told that. Say sem pessoa, tell com pessoa.
  • Esquecer de trocar os pronomes (She said I am late quando era ela que estava atrasada). Pergunte «quem fala?».
  • Manter tomorrow, yesterday, now quando o relato é feito noutro dia. Troque por the next day, the day before, then.
  • Recuar would, could, should.

Esquecer o recuo (said he is), usar said me, não trocar os pronomes e manter tomorrow ou yesterday. Confira sempre quatro pontos: verbo introdutor, pronomes, tempo e expressões de tempo.

O that é obrigatório?

Não. She said she was ill e She said that she was ill são ambas corretas.
