Resposta curta

As preposições de movimento mostram para onde, de onde ou por onde algo se desloca: to (destino), into e out of (entrar e sair), onto e off (para uma superfície e dela), through, across, along, past, up, down e towards. Exemplo: She walked into the room and across to the window.

Regras de utilização

Estas preposições acompanham verbos de deslocação (go, walk, run, jump, drive, climb, fly) e respondem à pergunta Where to? / Where from? / Which way? («Para onde? De onde? Por onde?»). Muitas têm uma versão para o lugar e outra para o movimento (in e into, on e onto).

Algumas preposições servem para as duas ideias, como under, over, behind, between e near: The ball is under the bed. e The ball rolled under the bed.

Transportes

Para entrar e sair de transportes grandes ou públicos use get on / get off: get on the bus, get off the train. Para carros e táxis use get in / get out of: get in the taxi, get out of the car. Para o meio de transporte use by: by bus, by car, by plane; e on foot para andar a pé.

Exceções

  • Sem «to»: com home, abroad, here, there, upstairs e downstairs não se usa preposição: go home, go abroad, go there, go upstairs.
  • Chegar: diz-se arrive in + cidade ou país e arrive at + local mais pequeno; nunca arrive to.
  • On e in em vez de onto e into: no inglês corrente ouvem-se jumped on the table e jumped in the lake.
  • Past e passed: past é preposição (walk past the school); passed é o passado do verbo pass (We passed the school).

Exemplos resolvidos

Exemplo 1 — Escolher a preposição

Enunciado: Complete: (a) The cat jumped ___ the table. (b) She walked ___ the room. (c) Get ___ the bus at the next stop. (d) The ball rolled ___ the hill.

Resolução:

  2. (b) Movimento de fora para dentro: into.
  3. (c) Sair de um autocarro: off.
  4. (d) Movimento para baixo numa descida: down.

Resposta: (a) onto; (b) into; (c) off; (d) down.

Enunciado: Complete: Go ___ Rua A, ___ the market, ___ the bridge and ___ the park. The school is on your left.

Resolução:

  1. Seguir uma rua: along.
  4. Atravessar um parque (espaço com limites): through.

Resposta: Go along Rua A, past the market, across the bridge and through the park.

Exemplo 3 — Traduzir do português

Enunciado: Traduza: (a) «Ele saiu da sala.» (b) «Atravessámos a estrada.» (c) «Passei pela escola.»

Resolução:

  1. (a) Sair de dentro de um espaço: out of, com o verbo walk ou go.
  3. (c) Passar sem parar: past.

Resposta: (a) He walked out of the room. (b) We walked across the road. (ou We crossed the road.) (c) I walked past the school.

Enunciado: Complete: Paulo got (1) ___ the taxi at the market, walked (2) ___ the gate and (3) ___ the yard, then climbed (4) ___ the stairs. He looked (5) ___ the window and saw children running (6) ___ the football field.

Resolução:

  1. (1) Sair de um táxi: out of.

  4. (4) Subir as escadas: up.
  5. (5) Olhar para fora da janela: out of.
  6. (6) Correr à volta do campo: around.

Resposta: (1) out of; (2) through; (3) across; (4) up; (5) out of; (6) around.

Erros frequentes

  • Dizer go to home: com home não se usa to (go home).
  • Usar in the bus com get: diga get on the bus; get in serve para carros e táxis.
  • Usar to em vez de into para entrar num espaço: jumped to the river → jumped into the river.
  • Confundir through e across: through atravessa o interior de algo; across vai de um lado ao outro de uma superfície.
  • Acrescentar to a towards: walked towards to the sea está errado.
  • Usar from of em vez de out of.
  • Dizer arrive to: use arrive in ou arrive at.
  • Trocar past por passed: past é preposição e passed é verbo.

Perguntas frequentes

Qual é a diferença entre «in» e «into»?

In indica lugar (onde se está): She is in the room. Into indica movimento para dentro (para onde se vai): She walked into the room. No inglês corrente, in aparece por vezes com verbos de movimento, mas nos exercícios use into.

Diz-se «go to home» ou «go home»?

Diz-se go home. Com home, abroad, here, there, upstairs e downstairs não se usa to. Já com school, the market ou the park usa-se: go to school, go to the market.

Como distingo «through», «across» e «over»?
