Resposta curta

Get forma muitos phrasal verbs, e a partícula decide o sentido: get up (levantar-se), get on e get off (entrar e sair de um autocarro), get over (recuperar de), get by (arranjar-se), get together (reunir-se), get away (fugir) e get on with (dar-se bem com alguém ou prosseguir uma tarefa).

Sozinho pode significar obter (get a ticket), receber (get a message), chegar (get home) ou tornar-se (get tired).

Quanto à gramática, quase todos são inseparáveis ou não levam objeto: o complemento vem logo a seguir (get over the flu, get over it). Duas exceções frequentes aceitam o objeto no meio: get back (recuperar) e get across (fazer entender): I got my phone back / I got it back; She got her idea across / She got it across.

Nota

Get + adjetivo (get tired, get angry, get better) significa «ficar» ou «tornar-se».

Exemplos resolvidos

Exemplo 1 — On, off, in ou out of

Enunciado: Complete com on, off, in ou out of: (a) We waited at the stadium and got ___ the bus to the centre. (b) She paid the driver and got ___ the taxi. (c) After the flight, the passengers got ___ the plane in Luanda. (d) He got ___ the car and locked it.

Resolução:

  1. Regra prática: para transportes grandes ou públicos, onde se pode andar de pé (autocarro, comboio, avião, barco), usa-se get on para entrar e get off para sair.
  2. Para carros e táxis usa-se get in para entrar e get out of para sair.
  3. (a) Autocarro, entrada (vai para o centro): on. (b) Táxi, saída (pagou ao motorista): out of. (c) Avião, saída (depois do voo): off. (d) Carro, saída (fechou-o à chave): out of.

Resposta: (a) on; (b) out of; (c) off; (d) out of. Verificação: got on the bus é «embarcou»; got out of the taxi é «saiu do táxi».

Exemplo 2 — Escolher o sentido

Enunciado: Complete com get over, get through, get by ou get away with, no tempo certo: (a) After her illness, it took Ana two weeks to ___ it. (b) He didn't do his homework and ___ it because the teacher forgot. (c) With so little money, how do they ___? (d) I phoned the office five times but I couldn't ___.

Resolução:

  1. (a) «Recuperar de uma doença» é get over; depois de took Ana two weeks to o verbo fica na forma base: get over it.
  2. (b) «Escapar impune» é get away with; a frase está no passado: got away with it.
  3. (c) «Arranjar-se com pouco dinheiro» é get by, depois de do they.
  4. (d) «Conseguir contacto por telefone» é get through, depois de couldn't.

Resposta: (a) get over; (b) got away with; (c) get by; (d) get through.

It took him months to recover from the shock. (b) At last I found the time to answer the letter. (c) The two friends meet every Friday. (d) The thief escaped.

Resolução:

  1. (a) «Recuperar de» é get over: It took him months to get over the shock.
  2. (b) «Arranjar tempo para» é get around to, seguido de -ing: At last I got around to answering the letter.
  3. (c) «Reunir-se» é get together: The two friends get together every Friday.
  4. (d) «Escapar» é get away, no passado: The thief got away.

Resposta: (a) get over; (b) got around to answering; (c) get together; (d) got away.

Exemplo 4 — Get on with: pessoa ou tarefa

Enunciado: Traduza: (a) Dou-me bem com a minha professora. (b) Vamos continuar com o trabalho.

Resolução:

  1. As duas frases usam a mesma forma, get on with, mas com sentidos diferentes.
I get on well with my teacher.
  3. (b) O complemento é uma tarefa: «prosseguir». Let's get on with the work.

Resposta: (a) I get on well with my teacher. (b) Let's get on with the work.

Erros frequentes

  • Usar get on e get off com carros e táxis. Para carros e táxis prefira get in e get out of.
  • Esquecer a preposição final. Get rid the old phone deve ser get rid of the old phone; get on well my cousin deve ser get on well with my cousin.
  • Inventar o passado.
  • Confundir get away e get away with. The thief got away é «fugiu»; The thief got away with it é «ficou impune».
  • Separar um inseparável. Get the flu over está errado; diga get over the flu.
  • Traduzir sempre get por «obter». Em get up, get by ou get together não há ideia de obter.

Perguntas frequentes

Quantos phrasal verbs com get existem?

Conte um dia inteiro com eles: get up → get on the bus → get off → get through the exam → get back home → get together with friends.

«Get on» e «get along» são iguais?

Para «dar-se bem» são praticamente iguais: get on é mais comum em inglês britânico e get along em inglês americano. Para «entrar num autocarro» só se usa get on.

Resumo

  • A partícula define o sentido: get up, get on, get over, get by, get together, get away.
