Resposta curta

Muitos verbos ingleses exigem uma preposição fixa antes do complemento: listen to, look at, wait for, depend on, believe in, talk about.

I'm waiting for the bus. A preposição fica sempre junto do verbo e antes do complemento, mesmo quando este é um pronome (look at it, wait for her). Para estudar, o critério mais útil é agrupar os verbos pela preposição que levam (to, at, for, about, of, in, on, with, from), e ter à parte a lista dos verbos que não levam preposição.

Neste artigo tratamos dos verbos preposicionais. Depois da preposição vem um nome, um pronome ou um verbo no -ing: I'm thinking of buying a bike.

Como memorizar

  1. Estude um grupo de cada vez (to, depois at, etc.).
  2. Aprenda o verbo com um complemento típico: wait for the bus, listen to music.

Exemplos resolvidos

Exemplo 1 — Completar com a preposição

Enunciado: Complete: (a) Please listen ___ the teacher. (b) I'm waiting ___ the bus. (c) It depends ___ the weather. (d) She believes ___ hard work. (e) We talked ___ football.

Resolução:

  1. (a) listen leva to.
  2. (b) wait leva for.
  3. (c) depend leva on.
  4. (d) believe leva in.
  5. (e) talk sobre um assunto leva about.

Resposta: (a) to; (b) for; (c) on; (d) in; (e) about.

Exemplo 2 — Look at, look for ou look after?

Enunciado: Complete com looking for, look at ou looks after: (a) I'm ___ my keys; I can't find them. (b) ___ this photo: it's beautiful. (c) My sister ___ our grandmother when she is ill.

Resolução:

  1. (a) Procurar algo que se perdeu: looking for.
  2. (b) Dirigir o olhar a algo: Look at.
  3. (c) Tomar conta de alguém: looks after.

Resposta: (a) looking for; (b) Look at; (c) looks after. Verificação: o verbo é sempre look, e só a preposição muda o sentido.

Exemplo 3 — Com ou sem preposição?

Enunciado: Corrija o que for preciso: (a) She entered in the room. (b) We discussed about the plan. (c) Marta married with a teacher.

Resolução:

  1. (a) enter liga-se diretamente ao complemento: retire in.
  2. (b) discuss liga-se diretamente ao complemento: retire about.
  3. (c) marry liga-se diretamente ao complemento: retire with.

Resposta: (a) She entered the room. (b) We discussed the plan. (c) Marta married a teacher. Verificação: em inglês, enter, discuss e marry funcionam sem preposição; com married, também se pode dizer Marta is married to a teacher.

Exemplo 4 — Nível de exame: texto com lacunas

Enunciado: Complete: I'm looking forward (1) ___ seeing you. Please don't worry (2) ___ the test: it depends (3) ___ how you prepare. I'll help you (4) ___ the exercises. Don't forget to apologise (5) ___ your teacher (6) ___ being late.

Resolução:

  1. (1) look forward to + -ing: to.
  2. (2) worry about: about.
  3. (3) depend on: on.
  4. (4) help someone with: with.
  5. (5) apologise to someone: to.
  6. (6) apologise for + -ing: for.

Resposta: (1) to; (2) about; (3) on; (4) with; (5) to; (6) for. Verificação: depois de to (em looking forward to) e de for (em for being) vem o -ing, porque ambas são preposições.

Erros frequentes

  • Omitir a preposição que existe em inglês: I listen music → I listen to music; I'm waiting the bus → I'm waiting for the bus.
  • Acrescentar uma preposição que não existe: discuss about, enter in, marry with, reach to.
  • Usar o infinitivo depois da preposição: I look forward to see you → I look forward to seeing you (aqui o to é preposição).
  • Confundir listen e hear: listen to é ouvir com atenção; hear liga-se diretamente ao complemento (I heard a noise).
  • Dizer arrive to: use arrive in (cidade, país) ou arrive at (local mais pequeno).
  • Dizer depend of: é depend on.
  • Dizer explain me: use explain it to me.
Who are you waiting for? é a forma normal da pergunta.

Ver solução

(1) for (apply for); (2) for (wait for); (3) in (believe in); (4) in (succeed in + -ing); (5) about (talk about); (6) on (depend on).

Qual é a diferença entre «hear» e «listen to»?

Listen to é prestar atenção ao que se ouve: I listen to the radio every morning. Em português ambos podem ser «ouvir».

Posso usar o infinitivo depois da preposição?

Não. Depois de uma preposição usa-se o verbo no -ing: thank you for helping, he insisted on paying. Atenção ao to de look forward to, que é preposição e leva -ing.

Resumo

  • Muitos verbos têm preposição fixa: listen to, look at, wait for, talk about, think of, believe in, depend on, agree with, suffer from.
  • A preposição pode mudar o sentido: look at, look for, look after.
  • O português induz em erro: «esperar o autocarro» é wait for the bus, e «discutir o plano» é discuss the plan.

Onde aprofundar
